Wooden’s Apple Orchard

Every fall I make this stop my staple. Located in the country on Dayton Mountain in Pikeville, TN you’ll find The Oren Wooden Apple Orchard. Best known as Wooden’s Apple House, this gem is about an hour drive north of Chattanooga. I go every year to stock up on their tasty fried apple desserts, apple butter, and a bag of apples of course. While visiting I also grab lunch at their cafe full of country, home-cooked food. They have fresh produce as well depending on the time of season that you go. Read my Wooden’s Apple House blog post to plan for your visit.

Fairmount Orchard

If you don’t want to venture so far out from Chattanooga, The Fairmount Orchard is located on Signal Mountain. This is about a 20 minute drive from downtown. The aroma of apples fills the air as soon as you walk in. I come here for their apple cider or even their sugar-free apple butter which is simply sweetened by their own apple cider. They have a great variety of apples to choose from as well if you want a peck or two to take home. Before you go, make sure to give them a call to see if they’re open. Currently they are undergoing training of new employees and plan to open for normal hours at the beginning of September. (Note: Photo below is from a few years ago when I went at the end of apple season so their shelves were a little bare.)

Wheeler’s Orchard and Vineyard

Also an hour drive away from Chattanooga is The Wheeler’s Orchard and Vineyard on Fredonia Mountain in Dunlap, TN. If you are looking to pick your own apples and maybe feed some sheep and goats as well, this place is a must. This is one of the only orchards in the Chattanooga area that allows you to pick your own apples. They also offer already picked apples you can purchase as well as other apple goodies. In the late summer you can also pick grapes. I still have yet to try this but when I do, I’ll be sure to share my experience with you. Be sure to read my blog post about Wheeler’s Orchard to learn more about the place and plan for your visit.

Apple Valley Orchard

This is a new favorite of mine that I only just discovered this year. Apple Valley Orchard is in the countryside near the Ocoee River in Cleveland, TN. Although they don’t allow u-pick, they have the next best thing. Instead of purchasing pre-packaged apples of one variety, you can pick out your own apples from the bins and mix and match varieties. You can even sample one or two before you decide to buy something new you haven’t tried before. This is a great way to get a bunch of different apples to enjoy at a lower cost. Choose from ¼ peck, ½ peck, or a whole peck. They also have second grade quality apples for a discounted price if you want to cook with a bunch of apples. And of course, they have a bakery and other apple products available to enjoy as well.

Mercier’s Apple Orchard and Winery

The largest and most well-known apple orchard in the area is Mercier’s Apple Orchard. This place is so big and popular, it has a huge parking lot and even shopping carts. When you walk into Mercier’s it feels like you’re in a grocery store. They have apples and apple products in one area, a bakery and candy shop in another, and even a winery area near the front. They also make their own sparkling and hard cider. There’s even more here than I can fit into a paragraph so you’ll have to check this place out for yourself. Although it’s the furthest apple orchard from Chattanooga, it’s a beautiful, scenic drive and worth the day trip to experience this place.
